  • Ibn Nuhaas (D. 814 H / 1393 AD) – Courage and Fear:
  • Abu Hurairah narrated: “The strong believer is more beloved to Allah than the weak believer” (Muslim)

The Messenger of Allah used to say: “O Allah I seek refuge in you from gloom and sorrow; from inaction and laziness; and from cowardice, stinginess and old age, and I seek refuge in you from the punishment of the grave” (Bukhari – Muslim)

Notice that the Messenger of Allah combined between seeking refuge in Allah from gloom and sorrow. For gloom is the fear of what is coming while sorrow is sadness on what has already passed. So the Muslim should not feel sorry for the past nor fear the future. And he combined between inaction and laziness for inaction is the state of the heart while laziness is the state of the body. He combined between stinginess and cowardice for stinginess is the unwillingness to give wealth for Allah while cowardice is the unwillingness to give the soul for Allah.

    How to overcome fear:

Cowardice is the opposite of courage. Courage is the firmness of the heart. The heart is the essence of every good deed. The heart cannot be firm if the mind isn’t sound. If the heart is weak it leads to cowardice, and if the heart is too strong it leads to recklessness.

The coward needs to cure cowardice by eliminating its cause. If it is caused by ignorance then ignorance is cured by learning. The cause could be fear of the unknown and that is cured by experiencing situations. We find that the beginner in public speaking experiences fear in the beginning but after experience this fear is overcome. We find that when a person first meets a king they might fear the occasion and their tongue would be tied and their posture would change.

That is due to the anxiety of facing a new experience. But if that occasion is repeated many times the fear is eliminated. Original nature can be changed. It is sufficient as proof to see a Hawa child (children trained to care for snakes) grabbing a large snake that would make a brave man tremble while this same child could fear a frog because he is not exposed to frogs. Taming animals is a process of changing their original nature and it is done through training. A wolf could play with a sheep, a cat with a mouse, and a dog with a cat if they are conditioned to do so even though that is contrary to their original nature. Now if animals can change their characteristics can’t humans do the same?

Having a strong heart leads to victory. Ali was asked: “How do you defeat your enemies?” He said: “When I would meet my enemy I would believe with firm conviction that I would defeat him while he believes that I would defeat him so both myself and his self support me against him”.

Some have advised: “Believe in victory, you will be victorious”

Others say: “If you fear your enemy you have allowed an army to be sent against your heart”

We have found that the ones who died because of their fear are more than the ones who died due to their courage.

Al Tartooshi says: Courage is of three types:

    1. A man who stands in front of the army asking for a challenger from the enemy to come out and face him.

    2. A man who remains calm, concentrating, tranquil while the battle is ragging. And when others are succumbing to fear he has not lost his orientation and is not confused and acts in a way that proves he has control over himself.

    3. A man when everyone else is defeated and is retreating remains firm calling them, and encouraging them to continue the fight.

Al Tartooshi says that the third man possesses the greatest form of courage.

    • Amongst the Courageous of this Ummah:
The most courageous of all mankind is the Messenger of Allah. He had the strongest heart of all. He faced the toughest of situations. Heroes would scatter from around him while he is firm. The Messenger of Allah never turned his back in battle.

In Bukhari and Muslim Anas bin Malik narrates: “The Messenger of Allah was the best of people, he was the most generous and the most courageous.”

Ali said: “When the ferocity of combat would reach its limit and the eyes would turn red we would seek refuge next to the Messenger of Allah. He would be the closest of us to the enemy.” (Muslim)

A man asked al Baraa bin Aazib: “Did you run away during the life of the Messenger of Allah?” He said: “We did. But he didn’t.” (Bukhari – Muslim)

In Uhud Ubayy bin Khalaf, riding his horse, charged towards the Messenger of Allah. Some Muslims wanted to get in the way to protect the Messenger of Allah but he told them to move aside. The Messenger of Allah picked up a spear and threw it at Ubayy who was covered in iron armor from head to toe. Nothing appeared from him except his eyes and a small opening in his neck. The spear hit him right in the neck and he fell off his horse. Even though the spear only caused a minor bruise in his neck due to the protection of the armor, Ubayy rushed back screaming: “Muhammad has killed me!” The people of Quraish checked him and said we don’t find any major injury. You are fine! He said: “Muhammad claimed he would kill me, therefore it must come to happen!” Ubayy latter died on his way back to Makkah.

The courageous of this Ummah are too many to count. On top of the list are the Sahabah whom Allah praised in Quran:
“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves.” (Al Fath 29)

    0000000001) Abu Bakr:

The courage of Abu Bakr was witnessed by the hero of the Ummah Ali bin Abi Talib.

When he was the Khalifah Ali asked: “Who is the bravest of men?” They said: “You are,” He said: “I have never dueled anyone and lost. But the bravest man is Abu Bakr. During the battle of Badr we built a shed for the Messenger of Allah and we asked who would be the bodyguard of the Messenger of Allah therein. Abu Bakr came carrying his sword and defended the Messenger of Allah for the entire day. In Makkah the disbelievers attacked the Messenger of Allah: One would pull him, the other would beat him and they would say: “Have you made the gods one God?” No one dared to go near the Messenger of Allah save Abu Bakr. He went and started fighting them and would say: “Are you going to kill a man just because he says: “Allah is my Lord!”““ Then Ali asked: “Who is better Abu Bakr or the believer of the family of Pharaoh? (His story is mentioned and praised in Quran)” The people remained quite. He said: “Why don’t you answer? In the name of Allah, one moment in the life of Abu Bakr is greater than the entire earth full of the likes of the believer of the family of Pharaoh! The believer of the family of Pharaoh was a man who concealed his faith while Abu Bakr was a man who proclaimed his faith”

Abu Bakr is the bravest man of this Ummah after the Messenger of Allah. One can note the strength of his heart during the battle of Badr, Uhud, the trench, al Hudaybiah, and Hunain. It is enough to note his steadfastness, firmness, and strengthening of the entire Ummah when the greatest disaster of all befell us: The death of Muhammad (saaws). That was when the hearts deviated, and the nation was shaken. When all the hearts where trembling the heart of the Siddeeq was firm. If the heart of Abu Bakr were placed on one side of the scale and the hearts of all the Ummah on the other, his heart would outweigh them all. The courage of Abu Bakr in his decision to fight the apostates if distributed over the hearts of the cowards on the entire face of the earth, it would be sufficient to make them brave.

    0000000002) Umar bin al-Khattaab:

It is sufficient to point out that the courage of Umar was sufficient enough to make Shaytaan avoid him.

The Messenger of Allah told Umar: “O son of Khattaab: In the name of whom my soul is in His hands whenever Shaytaan sees you taking a route, he would take another” (Bukhari – Muslim)

His Islam brought strength to the Muslims. Abdullah bin Masood said: “We used to not be able to pray next to al Kaabah publicly until Umar became Muslim.

    0000000003) Ali bin Abi Talib:

He was the lion of this Ummah. He never missed a battle with the Messenger of Allah except Tabook because the Messenger of Allah appointed him over Madinah in his absence. During the battle of Khaibar the Messenger of Allah said: “Tomorrow I will give the banner to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and Allah and His Messenger love him. He does not turn his back away in battle and Allah will make opening occur on his hands” All of the Sahabah desired that honor. The next day the Messenger of Allah called Ali and gave him the banner.

Musaab al Zubairi said: “Ali was very cautious in battle. He was swerve terrifically from his enemy and whenever he charges his enemy he would protect all his sides and when he retreats back from his charge he would be even more protective of himself. No one could get to him.

His shield was one sided. It only protected him from the front. When asked: “Don’t you fear an attack from behind?” He replied: “I never give my enemy the chance to attack me from my back”

    0000000004) Talhah bin Ubaidillah:

He is one of the ten given the glad tidings of Paradise. During Uhud he shielded the Messenger of Allah with his own body causing over 70 injuries in his body. Whenever the Messenger of Allah wanted to look at the disbelievers Talhah would plead with him not to do so and would shield him with his body.

0000000005) Al Zubair bin al Awwaam:

He is also one of the ten given the glad tidings of Paradise. He was the first Muslim to draw out a sword. During the early days of Islam in Makkah a rumor spread that the Messenger of Allah was kidnapped. Al Zubair drew out his sword and went looking for him. He ran into the Messenger of Allah who asked him: “What’s wrong with you Zubair?” He said: “I heard that you were kidnapped so I came out to fight them!” The Messenger of Allah prayed for him.

      • On one occasion Rasulallah said to Hazrat Ali, “You pertain to me and I pertain to you, ” He also said, “When I am patron of anyone, Ali is also his patron.”
Once Rasulallah said, “Only a hypocrite does not love Ali, and a believer does not hate him.”

According to a Hadith transmitted by Imam Ahmad, Rasulallah said to Hazrat Ali, “You have a resemblance to Jesus, whom the Jews hated so much that they slandered his mother and whom Christians loved so much that they placed him in a position not rightly his.”
Hazrat Ali afterwards said, “Two types of people will perish on my account, one who loves me so excessively that he praises me for what I do not possess, and one who hates me so much that he will be impelled by his hatred to slander me.”

for all over here………….. i know the excellence of hazrat ALA (R.A)……… he was amongst one of the most bravest general ever in islamic history!!…….. no doubt we found very few parallel examples ……but to give credit to just 1 person is really injustice……… u awl just talk about 1….. there stood an example of HAZRAT UMAR,HAZRAT KHALID BIN WALEED, HAZRAT ABU UBAIDHA BIN AL-JARRAH and many many more……… its not about the bravery its about the faith and acoording to following hadis the best in faith is Hazrat ABU BAKAR (R.A) …not only in this hadis but all of the blessed companions also agreeds on this………..

        – “Abu Bakr’s name shall be called out from all the gates of Paradise and he will be the first person of my Ummah to enter it.”

        – “Allah will show His glory to the people in a general way, but He will show it to Abu Bakr in a special way.”

        – “Never has the sun risen or set on a person, other than a prophet, greater than Abu Bakr.”

        – “Never was anything revealed to me that I did not pour into the heart of Abu Bakr.”

        – “There is no one to whom I am obligated and have not repaid my debt except Abu Bakr, for I owe him much for which Allah will compensate him on the Day of Judgement.”

        – “If I were to take an intimate friend (khalil) other than my Lord, I would have chosen Abu Bakr.”

        – “Abu Bakr does not precede you because of much prayer or fasting, but because of a secret that is in his heart.”

i havent given the references over here…. but BY GOD in whose hand my soul is…. i have read this in bukhari….

Hazrat Amr bin Aas said: I submitted, “O Allah’s Messenger! Who amongst all the people is the dearest to you?” He said, “Aisha”. I asked, “Out of the men?” He said, “Her father.” (Tirmidhi)

i just wanted to share my views so i did………. dont want to hurt any1’s feelings….

        PEACE!!

i have a question. are shias realy muslima? they spend all their lives to prove they are in islam but they fail. a muslim cannot say somethin while beleiving something else by heart. in shiaism its called Taqya, part of their mazhab. in islam we muslims call it hypocrisy, NIFAAQ. this reason alone can be a guild for a shia to real islam. forget about slandering the sahaba and ahlulbait that is clear kufr.

        • Assalamoalaikum my dear friend,
note that the BASE of ISlam is the belief i one ALLAH and his last Prophet Muhammad . IF this CENTERED pillar will CRASH ,no one is a MUSLIM. so We all are Muslims but not a Momin.
Momin is a person who abide by the laws of ALLAH and PROPHET and MUSLIM is a person who only Believes GOD and Prophet .

        • The real muslims are those muslims who believe in the path and guide of prophet Mohammad(SAW)
and his family are the real people who gave everything to save Islam. If shia muslims say they only
Prophet Mohammad(SAW) and his real descendants what is wrong with Shia Muslims. The first
three Khalifas what ever they might have done but they cannot take the places of Prophet and his
real descendants which Shia muslims claim. Anyway you may not understand this. Because you
dont love Prophet Mohammad(SAW) nor his family. You people only love the first three Idiots and
claim they are good. One day you will realize what is the truth lets wait for the Qayamat to come dog.
Inshallah you will know Who is a better Muslim Shia or Sunni.

        • Wa aliakum assalam; dear fellow may you quote the ayaat or hadith where taqayah is not allowed to save once life.
Second thing, If we are true believers of Islam, we should be united instead of discussing the sahaaba in whose era we were not present. After Muhammad (pbuh) Muslims were scattered in groups more than jews and christians, but note my friend we all have one holly book quran. The taqwa is the basis of a muslim strength making him Momin. We should only read about Taqwa and not other matters. Taqwa needs oneness of Allah, considering all prophets the true messengers, the holly books the message of Allah, belief in the day of judgement, belief in rebirth on day of judgment with all our doings in this life, the belief in Uolul Ammar/Mehdi(from the Mohammad Family), who will come before the day of judgement.

The 1st battle was in the era of fourth caliph between the muslims. So, the true sahabaas never wish nifaaq among muslims. However, the Allah never speak to sahaabah and they were true believers and followers. We can also be like wise true followers and true believers if work on taqwah.

          best regards

      • asalamualaikum wa rahmatullah.

i have a question. are shias realy muslims? they spend all their lives to prove they are in islam but they fail. a muslim cannot say somethin while beleiving something else by heart. in shiaism its called Taqya, part of their mazhab. in islam we muslims call it hypocrisy, NIFAAQ. this reason alone can be a guild for a shia to real islam. forget about slandering the sahaba and ahlulbait that is clear kufr. all shias are slandering ahlulbait. what kind of relegion is that? don’t you open your eyes? slandering in ISLAAM??? it is not ISLAAM rather it is called SHIISM. so if you think ur a muslims then come to islam and leave shiaism which will ultimately take u to hellfire. realy put aside all the prejudice and hatreds. and think of hellfire for moment.
Allah swt may guild all the ignorant shias to Islam. ameen

I think the shia are blind and miss guided and what seems obvious to the muslims is not seen by them becouse in there hearts there is a sickness and Allah S.W.T increase that sickness so they can not understand that they are not muslims…May Allah S.W.T increase our understanding and open our door Ameen

    8. Lets take hazrat abbas bin imam ali(As) he was more strong and brave than abu bakr umar and usman and some others. in battle of siffin he was only 11 years old. he attacked the forces and killed 7 sons of a deadly warrior from muawiya,s camp then, the father himself came out and and abbas bin ali(as) killed him too.

AT once abbas bin ali(As) killed 90 enimies from muawiya,s army, i mean look at the strenght of this 11 yr old son of imam ali(AS), and we r comparing imam ali(As) to people who couldnt won at khyber.

    9. fear Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala when talking ill of the sahabah of the rasool of Allah (sallahu alayhi wa sallam)!

      you guys always talk about how abu’bakr (radhiAllahu anhu) wasn’t all that great, but let’s really put this into context shall we;

who exactly was it whom the Prophet (sallahu alayhi wa sallam) himself asked to accompany him on his hijra? …oh, that’s right! it was Abu’bakr (radhiAllahu anhu).

And when they were on their hijra, and they hid in the cave, Abu’bakr (radhiAllahu anhu) said, while the mushriqeen were at the entrance to the cave, that all they had to do was look under their feet and they would surely be seen. The Messenger answered, “ﻣﺎ ﻇﻨﻚ ﻳﺎ ﺃ ﺑﺎ ﺑﻜﺮ ﺑﺎ ﺛﻨﻴﻦ ﺍﷲ ﺛﺎ ﻟﺘﻬﻤﺎ” (What do you think O’ Abu Bakr about two people if Allah is the third, meaning God was with them.)

I am not here to argue with anyone as i actually fear that discussing with you may inadvertently force my tongue to speak ill of someone.

      • I really think you are right,Muslims should take the great sahabas as there role models in performing there IBAADAT rather than thinking of who was the bravest amoung them and thereby sinning…The sahabas has played there roles in islam and were very faithful to Allah (S.W.T).We are just lazy judges with no wisdom. This who is who thoughts are what lead to the destruction of people who called themselves shia, shytan has his way couse they were concentrating on things that are not relevant to Allah

        • Salam, this is where we make mistake. You wish to follow other then the person who as Muslim you have been ordered by Allah to follow – Uswae Hasana. I feel sorry who say follow sahaba (or make them role model) and not Prophet Muhammad, or consider following sahaba as following the Propher (PBUH). Allah say to hold on to his “rope” and there will be unity. As long as all Muslims hold on to Allah, there is no difference, as long as they follow and hold on to the Propher (PBUH), there is unity, the moment, muslims disregard Allah’s order and hold on to sahaba – result is clear division and hate. Sahab may be considered important followers and nothing more. Refrain from making them more important the the Prophet and Allah – it is amazing that a fellow muslim believe in Allah and his last Messenger (PBUH) it does not matter, but he does not believe in some sahaba and he is killed despite his believe which is sufficient for Allah and his Messenger (PBUH)??? feel sorry for those who have this sick mind

Shia is a party of Hazrath Ali and Sunni is the party of not only the first three Khalifs but also the supporters of yazid and his fore fathers. this is fact. The shia people say nothing wrong to any good person they follow the true Islam which was brought by the principles of Prophet Mohammad S.A.W.a and his real family. Others were only eager of power and lust. this is fact.

not all people who saw prophet muhammad(saw) were truthful, its also in sahih bukhari. take a look.
After all, the Prophet (s) has already warned us:
􀂉 “I shall arrive at the Pool before you, and he who passes by me will drink, and
whoever drinks from it will never feel thirsty. There will come to me people that I
know and they know me, but we shall be separated, then I shall say, ‘My
companions’. An answer shall come, ‘You do not know what they did after you’.then i shall say “Away with those who changed afer me”.

    18. Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman said, “People used to ask the Prophet (sallallahu alayhe wa sallam) about good things, but I used to ask him about bad things because I was afraid that they might overtake me. I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we were lost in ignorance (Jahiliyyah) and evil, then Allah brought this good (i.e. Islam). Will some evil come after this good thing?’ He said, ‘Yes’ I asked, ‘And will some good come after that evil?’ He said, ‘Yes, but it will be tainted with some evil’ I asked, ‘How will it be tainted?’ He said, ‘There will be some people who will lead others on a path different from mine. You will see good and bad in them. I asked, ‘Will some evil come after that good?’ He said, ‘Some people will be standing and calling at the gates of Hell; whoever responds to their call, they will throw him into the Fire.’ I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, describe them for us.’ He said, ‘They will be from our own people, and will speak our language.’ I asked, ‘What do you advise me to do if I should live to see that?’ He said, ‘Stick to the main body (jama’ah) of the Muslims and their leader (Imam). I asked, What if there is no main body and no leader?’ He said ‘Isolate yourself from all of these sects, even if you have to eat the roots of trees until death overcomes you while you are in that state.'”

‘Abd Allah ibn Mas’ud said: “The Prophet said, ‘Islam began as something strange, and it will revert to being strange as it was in the beginning, so good tidings for the strangers.’ Someone asked, ‘Who are the strangers?’ He said, ‘The ones who break away from their people (literally, ‘tribes’) for the sake of Islam.’ “This Hadith was narrated by Ibn Majah on the authority of Anas and Abu Hurairah.
Anas ibn Malik said, “The Prophet said, ‘The time of the Dajjal will be years of confusion. People will believe a liar, and disbelieve one who tells the truth. People will distrust one who is trustworthy, and trust one who is treacherous; and the Ruwaybidah will have a say.’ Someone asked, ‘Who are the Ruwaybidah?’ He said, ‘Those who rebel against Allah and will have a say in general affairs.'” (Ahmad.)

    22. I can not believe that so called muslims would be fighting and calling each other names. Are you muslims? Shias or Sonnis does not matter. What matters is that you have faith on Allah’s oness, The Holy Quran. Ali was not only one of the sahabas but was also Son in law, Cusin brother and was raised by the prophet. Abu Bakar was given the name of Sadiq by the prophet himself and he was his father in law and so was Umar. We should respect the sahabas. Each have their on place in Islam. Tuba Nausbillah we are not even like the dust on the shoes. How can we as mortals talk ill about the sahabas. Only Allah knows best. We should unit to face the rest of the world rather then bickering among ourselves.
